Dancing With The Stars Rules Explained

This week the couples who had the most entertaining routines were bashed by the judges for breaking the rules. Here is Len Goodman's explanation:

I was massively ticked by the judges this week. Mario's tango was breath taking. Vivica's was a bore. Will someone please tell whether doing a cartwheel in the middle of a mambo is not a "rule breaker?" (week 2) I say to Mario and Karina--- we'll keep voting. You just keep dancing the way you want to and you will dazzle all the way to the top.

I agree. I was so annoyed by the judges tonight. Mario's Tango was amazing, but they ignored everything good about the performance and just focused on the small "rule breakers."

Its pretty obvious that Mario and Joey are the strongest dancers though the scores did not reflect that of course. And poor Emmitt lost his ground. But at the top of the leaderboard- Monique was just pretty good and Vivica was BORING last night. Sara did better but she has no excitement and passion in her dancing- it's way too controlled. Though the average dancer on this year's show is better than last year's show, I am used to seeing someone wow me week after week (ie: Drew and/or Stacy)- and no one is doing that so far except for penalized Mario. The top of the leaderboard is pretty blah. (This is all coming from someone who doesnt complain on blogs very often haha.) Anyway-Drew & Cheryl's jive and Tia and Max's tango would have beat all the performances from last night. And for whos going home- I love Willa but I dont think she did enough to overcome lack of voter support...

The judges were annoying last night but I guess I get their point. At least they penalized Joey and Mario equally. (But didnt someone else do a lift too....and wasnt penalized.... I cant remember who right now!) But dont think either couple were really TRYING to break the rules. It sure wont happen again after this I bet. I actually would put more blame on the pro dancers- esp the one who danced last year like Edyta- they definitely should know the rules and choreograph to follow. It just too bad the top dancers/crowd pleasers arent gettin the top scores- but that will probably change next week!

The other "lift" couple was Emmitt & Cheryl, and I think they got penalized accordingly. Actually I agreed with the judges. Even if this is a pro/am entertainment competition, there are basic rules to each dance and to blatantly disregard them, as Mario has done twice now, shows disrespect not only to the dance, but to the professional community, so they were right to call them out for it. And I totally agree that the bulk of the blame should be placed on the professionals who should know better.

And you're right - Willa is toast. Too bad too, because I adore Max. :D

Me too Jen- He's my favorite male- love his choreography this year and last year.

Cheryl has been my favorite female but I really like Karina too now.

And after all, if they just ignored all the rules, it may as well not be a ballroom dancing competition.

Dances can be very exciting and completely blow you away without breaking a single rule - some of the Strictly Come Dancing contestants over here have proved that.

And it's entirely possible to put lifts in and still have a dull routine.

i hope someone can explain this to me. everytime without fail we see the professionals do a dance routine, we see them do lifts, several lifts sometimes. why is that lifts are not allowed? if we keep seeing lifts in the demos why are they disallowed in the competition? i have never understood this.

I agree. That was nothing more than a "Simon-esq" way of upping the ratings...booo on the judges

If the definition of a lift is your partner lifting you then a cartwheel is NOT a lift. You execute a cartwheel on your own.

I thought that all the girls were supposed to do the "Jive" and the boys were doing the "Tango" correct? Then why did Vivica A. Fox do the tango and Joey Lawrence do the jive??? My husband said it was because Vivica was offened that the dance was called the "Jive" and that "term" is not politcally correct. So she refused to dance it. Apparently she doesnt know her history and where and what that term really represents!

Depending on who is eliminated when, there will always be a point where there will be an uneven number of male and female celebrities, so that's the minor reason. The main reason is that when Jive comes up on the rotation, the show will always start shifting people around, so that the older or less able celebrities will not have to dance it (John O'Hurley, George Hamilton and now Jerry Springer have now all gotten that bye).
