Modern Jive

I've heard about Modern Jive from promotional emails about dance parties at Empire Dance studio. All I knew about Modern Jive is that it is the easiest dance to learn. So today James and I went to one of these parties. From what I saw, Modern Jive is a hodgepodge of all kinds of moves from all kinds of dances. Basically it seemed that anything goes in this dance. The music that they played was very cool upbeat funky stuff varying in style from disco to hip hop to rock-n-roll to cha cha. At one point they had a mini lesson during which the instructor explained several moves, but he did not really dwell on the timing of the steps or which foot goes where. That's why the term "move" is actually more appropriate than "step". Again, to me this dance seems to have very little structure without pre-defined rules. As long as the two people that are dancing are on the same beat, that is what matters. And this is one of my favorite ways of dancing - just improvising together with my partner.

Modern Jive parties are held at Empire Dance studio on the fourth Saturday of every month.
