Google Earth

Can you imagine to zoom in from outer space:

all the way to the street where I live:

For a while I was impressed by Google Maps - the way you can just drag them with your mouse. But today I discovered a whole new dimension to viewing satellite images - Google Earth. You can literally fly from one place on Earth to another (you zoom out all the way out into outer space, see Earth rotate to the direction of your destination, and zoom in up to the street level where you can see cars and people! You can drag the image and it will pan over redrawing the new area on the fly! You can change the viewing angle and see elevation. You can also display local attractions, restaurnats and hotels right over the images of the streets. This is suuuper cool. Since it's a stand-alone desktop application, as opposed to something that runs in your browser, Google Earth can take full advantage of your computer's hardware. Speaking of which, you do need to have a supped up computer to be able to run it effectively. Try it now! (Currently works on Windows only).

But there are good news and bad news. The good news is that areas such as New York City are mapped out very well. The bad news is that my hometown St. Petersburg, Russia only has part of it mapped out to high resolution. Also to find it, I had to enter Moscow in the search box and than pan over to St. Petersburg which is spelled on the map as Sankt-Peterburg (to match Russian spelling).

    Hey Raph,

This is Ricardo. I'm not sure if you remember me.
I worked at Sakonnet a long time ago.

In any case, I've been working on a project involving Google Earth at Carnegie Mellon University. If you turn on "National Geographic Layers" and go to Africa, you'll see what I've been working on. Just click on the yellow squares and red airplanes.

Hey Ricardo. Of course I remember you! Great to hear from you! Boy it's been a long time, but believing or not I am still at Sakonnet.

I checked out the National Geographic Layers - very cool. Clicking on the yellow squared displays a photo from the place along with the link to the National Geographic article about the place! There is so much to explore and so little time :(

    Hey Raph,

I love Google Earth! It's pretty addictive and it's pretty cool/creepy to be able to see the backyard of my house. It does suck that while resolution in some areas are good, in others it is bad. My boyfriend (who is also Russian) had problems finding the city where he grew up. And in Egypt, only Cairo has good res. Hope all is well with you, happy to see I'm not the only one that appreciates GE.

Hey Zia. It's nice to hear from you. Hope it's just a matter of time until we'll be able to poke around all over the world.

Cool stuff. I will be installing it at home. Can't do so here at work, for obvious reasons. This should be great for several projects.

Ha ha, big brother is watching you, Gary! :)

Did you know that once you identify a location in a fotki album, you can just click on the little globe icon and select Google Earth from the menu. Then select "Open" from File Download dialog box and Google Earth will take you straight to the location. Test it with your own Yucatan album:

I think currently though it takes you straight into the waters of the East coast of Africa :) Looks like either the coordinates are wrong or there is a bug with fotki. But the idea is cool.

Hi Raphael,,, thanks,,, I went back and fixed it... l&l was off...

Google Earth Zooms right into the ground almost,,, I wonder if you can set the stopping point so it doesn't zoom in so far, or it that always the default??? Also,,, I can't see what the altitude --- feet setting does in photo location setting of Fotki??? Any ideas??? Gary

Hi Gary. Glad that it now works once you fixed it. I don't know how to control the initial zoom level in Google Earth. Maybe that's what the altitute setting is. Have you tried to put a number there and see if that controls the zoom?

Personally I don't think I'll use this feature a lot. I wish Fotki focused on some more important fixes like editing comments in Journals and the search engine.

Yes, I agree,,, those enhancements are much more important... I'm just working with what we have and this week was the location thing...

No the altitude thing seems to do nothing... Actually I will use the feature for some of my trips but that's about it... Have a nice week, Gary... thanks for the response,,, Gary

PS,,, You have probably noticed that I always put a plug in for edit/delete ones own comment in journals like guestbook and photo comments,,, hope we get that,,, It's a pain having to reply to yourself in someones journal comment because you have to fix something... Cheers!!! Gary

Yes, I noticed your plugs and am glad you added them. Hopefully we'll get the grease soon!
